The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) is strengthening its rehabilitation services and support for children and families through the establishment of its first play therapy room at its Portmore probation office in St. Catherine.

Play therapy is a form of psychotherapy that helps children process and express their emotions through play. The room, which will be staffed by two play therapists, was unveiled as part of the official opening of the office on July 8 at Shop 19, Big Buy Plaza, Lot 16 West Trade Way.

“This marks an important milestone in the delivery of probation services, particularly for children who come into contact with the justice system or who are affected by family conflict, drama or other adverse experiences,” said State Minister, Ministry of National Security & Peace, the Hon. Juliet Cuthbert Flynn.

“By introducing this specialised service, the Department is strengthening its capacity to support and provide early therapeutic interventions that support emotional healing, fosters resilience, and contributes to better long-term outcomes to children and their families. It is a powerful reminder that rehabilitation is not ‘one size fits all’, but must respond to the unique needs of every individual, especially our youngest and most vulnerable.”

The new facility was designed in keeping with modern professional standards and features private counselling rooms, sex offender registration rooms, executive offices and a large conference room. Leading the charge was Commissioner of Corrections Brigadier (Ret’d) Radgh Mason who said the facility reflects a broader mission to modernise the DCS’ facilities and service delivery.

“We’re not simply cutting a ribbon today – we’re strengthening the national security ecosystem,” Commissioner Mason said. “Probation, rehabilitation, reintegration and reducing the reoffending of all – it contributes directly to national security. Every person guided towards a productive life and strengthening their families, the communities – it strengthens Jamaica on a whole and this is our business.”

He continued, “Our goal is clear: professional, accessible environments that support effective supervision, productivity, and a dignified space to engage. We will keep moving forward along this mission of 100 per cent engagement of offenders. No one must be left behind.”

The Portmore probation office forms part of the Region One network of offices, which includes St. Catherine, St. Thomas, and Kingston and St. Andrew. Collectively, the region serves 1,280 non-custodial clients, including registered sex offenders. The DCS, through its probation aftercare officers, currently supervises a total of 2,093 non-custodial clients and 507 registered sex offenders.

Members of the public may access services Monday to Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. The office may also be contacted via email at portmoreprobation@dcsjm.gov.jm or by telephone at 876-320-1170.
