Specialised And Medical Services Division

The Medical Services Division provides comprehensive healthcare to inmates, remandees, and wards in custody across all correctional institutions. The team is dedicated to delivering essential medical, dental, and mental health services to support the well-being of those in our care. Our Services The medical services offered by the team include:
  • General Medical Care – Daily curative clinics in adult institutions
  • Mental Health Support – Psychiatric evaluations, psychological assessments, and ongoing care
  • Dental Services – Routine and emergency dental care
  • Antenatal & Postnatal Care – Maternity support for expectant mothers
  • Ophthalmology Screening – Vision care and eye health assessments
  • Drug & HIV Testing – Screening and counselling services
  • Nutritional Support – Meal planning and weight management assistance, facilitated by a dedicated dietitian
Pharmacy Services The Medical Unit operates an in-house pharmacy that dispenses prescribed medications for inmates, remandees, and children in custody. If a prescription cannot be filled internally, family members may assist with the purchase of medication, provided that the necessary consent forms are completed. Additionally, medical information can only be released with signed consent. Partnerships & Collaborations The Medical Services Division collaborates with several local and international partners who provide critical support, including equipment donations, training opportunities, and direct healthcare services. Key partners include:
  • Health Through Walls (USA) – Established the HIV treatment programme in adult correctional centres
  • Food for the Poor – Donations of medical equipment and medication
  • AIDS Healthcare Foundation
  • Ministry of Health & Wellness
  • Tulane University & CDC
  • Bellevue Hospital & Regional Health Authorities
  • National Health Fund (NHF)
  • Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Office
These partnerships help strengthen its capacity to provide high-quality medical care to those in our correctional institutions.

In addition, a staff clinic has been established at the Tamarind Farm Adult Correctional Centre, where employees can access medical services by appointment.

Medical Team

The Division consists of a diverse team of healthcare professionals, including:

  • Medical Director
  • Five full-time Consultant Psychiatrists
  • One full-time Obstetrician/Gynaecologist
  • One Dental Surgeon
  • Ten full-time Medical Officers
  • Two sessional Psychiatrists and two sessional Medical Officers
  • Three Mental Health Officers
  • Pharmacist, Nutritionist, and two Pharmacy Technicians
  • Medical Assistants, Psychiatric Nursing Aides, and Patient Care Assistants
  • Inventory Clerks and Administrative Support Staff
