The Unit provides a wide range of services to the inmates/ remandees and children in custody. In the last two years, a staff clinic was established at the Tamarind Farm Adult Correctional Centre where staff members are seen by appointment. Services provided include antenatal and postnatal care, dental, ophthalmology screening, mental health services including Psychiatric evaluations and Psychological assessments. Daily Curative clinics are facilitated in the adult institutions. Drug testing and HIV testing are also offered. Recently a Dietician joined the team, and he will assist with meal planning as well as assisting inmates and staff to attain optimal body weights.
The Medical Unit has had many partners over the years, who have assisted in various ways, some provide equipment, sponsor our attendance at overseas conferences, facilitate training of staff or direct services to the inmates. Some of the partners are Health Through Walls, a Florida-based NGO. They were instrumental in establishing a HIV treatment program in the adult centres. Food for the poor, has donated equipment and medications for inmates and staff. AIDS Healthcare Foundation, Ministry of Health and wellness, Tulane University, CDC, Bellevue, the various Health Regions, NHF. DPP office are just a few of the other organizations we have partnered with over the years.
The Medical Unit has a pharmacy through which all medications prescribed for the inmates/reminders and children are dispensed. However, there are times when we are unable to fill the prescription, and family members might offer to do so. There are consent forms for this as well as consent forms that must be signed for any medical information to be released.
