Life Skills Rehabilitation Programme: Empowering Offender Clients for Reintegration

The Department of Correctional Services offers a Life Skills Rehabilitation Programme, adapted from the National Youth Service Curriculum, to instill vital life competencies in inmates. The initiative is a key part of the Department’s holistic approach to rehabilitation.

7-Week Life Skills Programme

This behaviour change initiative focuses on personal development and positive behaviour. Topics include:

  • Introduction to Life Skills

  • Effective Communication

  • Decision-making & Problem Solving

  • Emotional Intelligence

  • Conflict Management

  • Family Life Management

  • Healthy Lifestyle

In 2024, multiple cohorts of offender clients completed this programme, reporting improved emotional awareness and interpersonal skills.

8-Week Life Skills Through Sports Programme

This innovative programme teaches life skills using sports as a medium to build teamwork, discipline, and resilience. Topics include:

  • Teamwork & Cooperation

  • Discipline and Self-control

  • Goal Setting & Achievement

  • Resilience & Perseverance

  • Leadership & Responsibility

  • Respect & Fairplay

  • Problem Solving & Critical Thinking

  • Communication & Interpersonal Skills

Inmates shared that the programme fostered a positive atmosphere, with many reflecting that if they had known and applied these life skills earlier, they might not have ended up incarcerated.
