Inmates are provided with reasonable opportunities to maintain family connections through Discretionary Visits, which are granted by the Superintendent. These visits are typically extended to relatives travelling from overseas or long distances, facilitating important family contact that supports rehabilitation.
The approval of discretionary visits is subject to institutional regulations and prevailing security considerations, ensuring that the safety and order of the facility are upheld.
Additionally, special visit privileges may be authorised at the Superintendent’s discretion based on the current conditions within the institution, allowing flexibility to accommodate exceptional circumstances.
The Superintendent holds the responsibility of gathering all relevant information concerning the circumstances surrounding each request for a Discretionary Visit. Decisions on these requests are communicated within the most reasonable timeframe to ensure transparency and timely responses.
Discretionary Visits may be authorised regardless of the usual rules governing the standard frequency of inmate visits. This provides flexibility to accommodate special situations that warrant additional contact with family members.
Typically, standard Discretionary Visits are limited to fifteen (15) minutes. However, the Superintendent retains the authority to adjust the duration of visits based on the particular circumstances and institutional considerations.
