Academic Programmes

  • Remedial (Juvenile): Juvenile offender clients are engaged by trained teachers under the guidance of the National Standards Curriculum in Mathematics, Language Arts, Civics, Social Studies, etc.
  • Remedial (Adult): Adult offender clients are supported by trained teachers and Correctional Officers using the High School Diploma Equivalency (HSDE) curriculum.
  • CSEC/CAPE: Offender clients are engaged using the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) and Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) curricula. Subject areas include Electronic Document Preparation & Management (EDPM), English, Mathematics, Human and Social Biology (HSB), Principles of Business and Accounts, Office Administration, Home and Family
    Life Management, Food and Nutrition, Social Studies, History, Physical Education, etc.
  • Associate Degree: Clients with CSEC and CAPE qualifications may pursue a Business Associate Degree through a partnership with the University of the Commonwealth Caribbean (UCC) and Stand Up for Jamaica.
  • From Prison to College: Delivered in collaboration with The University of the West Indies (UWI), this course enables inmates to earn credits while incarcerated, with the aim of matriculating to UWI upon release.

Notable Achievements:

  • In the 2024 CSEC examinations, one inmate who had never attended school prior to incarceration successfully attained two CSEC subjects (Grade II) after progressing through the remedial and CSEC programmes.
  • The first cohort of inmates to complete a Bachelor’s Degree within DCS did so in December 2024. This was built on a prerequisite Associate Degree completed within the correctional facility.
