The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) is expanding its rehabilitation programme to include community service projects, furthering its commitment to the reintegration of inmates into society through positive engagement and skill development.
This initiative marks a significant step in the DCS’ efforts to prepare inmates for successful re-entry into the community by fostering a sense of responsibility and community involvement.
In a recent demonstration of this expanded programme, inmates from the Tower Street Adult Correctional Centre were actively engaged in de-bushing and clean-up activities along lower South Camp Road in Kingston. This effort not only contributed to the beautification of the area but also provided inmates with an opportunity to develop a stronger connection to the community.
Commissioner of Corrections, Brigadier (Ret’d) Radgh Mason, emphasised the importance of these initiatives in the rehabilitation process. “Our goal is to create opportunities for inmates to give back to society, learn new skills, and gain a sense of accomplishment. By involving them in community service projects, we are helping to build a foundation for their successful reintegration into society.”
The DCS’ community service projects are designed to benefit both the inmates and the communities they serve. These projects include activities such as environmental clean-ups, infrastructure improvements, and other services that address the needs of local communities.
“The recent clean-up along lower South Camp Road is just one of many initiatives that the DCS plans to implement as part of this programme. The DCS is committed to working closely with community partners, local authorities, and other stakeholders to identify and execute projects that provide mutual benefits”, the Commissioner stated.
The expansion of the rehabilitation programme aligns with the department’s broader mission to ensure that inmates are equipped with the skills and attitudes necessary for a smooth transition back into society. By engaging in meaningful community service, inmates gain a deeper understanding of the impact they can have on their environment and the lives of others.
