Connect With Love Ones

The Department of Correctional Services is dedicated to strengthening family ties and social support networks for inmates. All inmates shall have reasonable opportunities to communicate with their families and loved ones, subject to institutional regulations and security protocols.

Visits and Communications

  1. Communication between inmates and their relatives or friends shall be permitted, subject to any restrictions necessary for maintaining discipline and order within the adult correctional centre and for the prevention of crime. The following rules shall apply:
    • Every inmate shall be allowed to write and receive one letter upon admission to the adult correctional centre.
    • Throughout their sentence, each inmate shall be permitted to write and receive one letter at intervals of no less than one month.
    • Every inmate shall be allowed one visit after completing one month in custody, and subsequently at intervals of no less than one month.
    • Notwithstanding the provisions above, an inmate who has been disciplined for a breach of regulations shall not be permitted to write or receive any letters or to receive visits until they have served one month without further infractions.
  1. The Superintendent may, at their discretion, allow an inmate entitled to a visit to write a letter and receive a reply in lieu of the visit.
  2. The Superintendent may also authorise an inmate to write a special letter, receive a reply, or have a special visit under the following circumstances:
    • The death or serious illness of a close relative.
    • Urgent business or family matters.
    • Arrangements for securing employment or assistance from friends upon release.
  1. If an inmate is prohibited from writing or receiving a letter, the Superintendent may, at their discretion, communicate any matter of importance to the inmate or their family.
  2. A maximum of two visitors shall be permitted to visit an inmate at any one time.
  3. Male inmates shall be visited in the presence of a male correctional officer, while female inmates shall be visited in the presence of a female correctional officer.
